Dull thoughts on a shiny, shiny world.

In recent times I think we've all grown aware that there seems to be a thriving trade in insults on the political pages of Joe User. From the Right's stock phrases "Go back and look at Clinton" and "loony loopy/lopopy luddite" (Drs. Guy et Miler, 2005) to the leftist's "shut up you ignorant moron" and vitriolbot (Myrrander et al, various), I think JU is seeing a renaissance in insults not seen since the height of the pre-election fervour.

I for one applaud it. I think it's time for everyone to embrace their inner child and indulge in the good, honest fun of political name-calling. It's unimaginably cathartic. Take the death of real discussion in the style of your political foes, and let trivial disputes overwhelm your preference for unnecessary reasoned argument.

Spread the love and the word of JU as it were. With past masters like < name censored >, < name censored >, < name censored >, < name censored > and others to lead us into the dawn of this exciting new day all we have to lose are our inhibitions and our minds.

And in a world of giant waves and dancing robots, that's a small price to pay for peace of (fractured) mind.

The best political insults of recent time came from former Vice President Spiro Agnew. My favorite is his comment about the press, "In the United States today, we have more than our share of the nattering nabobs of negativism. They have formed their own 4-H Club - the 'hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history." Source (and other good quotes) at http://mindyourownbusiness.com/famous_insults.htm

Of course Agnew, who had been mayor of Baltimore prior to becoming Richard Nixon's Vice President, was forced to resign because of a little matter of accepting bribes as mayor. He sure put the VICE in Vice President!

I've always like Mark Latham's (former Australian opposition leader) famous comments on John Howard and his cabinet:

"John Howard [current Australian PM] is an arse-licker" [about howard's attitude towards George Bush.]

"They're a conga-line of suckholes" [about the Liberal cabinet]

And to think he didn't win the election... unimaginable.

I am honored to attributed, but i think it was the other doc that came up with the Lopopy one.

I will stick with the Loony Loopy Luddite for the whackos on the left.  It has a certain Panache'.

I had forgotten those!  Thanks for the refresher course.  Seems the more things change, the more they stay the same!  Sure beats Bush's Clymer Comment! !

I'll change it. Can't have misrepresentations of the truth now, can we?

I've always associated panache with James Bond-style cool. I can't imagine him ever saying any like it. But each to their own I suppose.

the nattering nabobs of negativism

hmmmm had i seen this here first, it woulda saved me posting it on dabe's thread.

cactoblasta, if you just build on yours a lil bit you have the insult equivalent of steve goodman's perfect country song ('you don't even call me by my name'): 'bill clinton's mum's chops'.

on Jan 18, 2005
I was trying to make my insult nonpolitical, but you're right. I remember you saying it on that other thread whose name I can't quite recall. Or maybe...

George Bush and Bill Clinton's mum's chops! So nyah!
